Consultancy, appraisal and valuation
We specialise in appraising, and valuations on all types of fireplaces and chimney pieces, from the very grand Georgian period to the more modest Edwardian period.
We have worked in many prestigious buildings in the South East and Home Counties, viewing, appraising and restoring some of the most impressive chimney pieces and fireplaces in the Country.
We have advised numerous companies and Architects over the years on many aspects of fireplaces, from minimising damage on full refurbishments of buildings to ascertaining the appropriate fireplace to match the period of the building or style of the room.
We can also advise on restoring a fireplace and aftercare.
Through our many years of experience and knowledge, we can identify the period of the fireplace from Georgian or earlier, up to the present day, if they are copies (reproductions) or original to the property and value them appropriately.
We have valued many fireplaces for various large houses, Trusts and Embassies and written detailed reports with identifications of marbles, periods and as much general information as can be gathered from the fireplace itself, plus background information from further searches of the property.
Large Statuary Marble Carved Chimneypiece Palladian Style (Circa 1750)
The fire chimneypiece consists of a pair of acanthus corbels with fruit embellishment down each jamb, terminating into a plain foot block.
The ingos are carved with egg and dart mouldings, matching the details of the shelf.
The frieze is plain with a large carved centrepiece, showing an urn draped in fruit swags.
The shelf has a broken pediment detail, popular in surrounds of this style.
Surround to be cleaned. Front carved jambs have moved and are now out of alignment showing gaps. Suggest that these are removed and re-set in position. Alternatively gaps to be filled.
The cleaning process will improve the look of the chimneypiece but there is smoke damage, which will remain. On the mantelpiece (shelf) between the broken pediment there is damage to the waterleaf moulding. Marble to be let in and re-carved. The carved centrepiece has a crack to the left hand side, suggest this is cleaned and filled. There is also damage to right hand internal egg and dart detail, again marble to be let in and carved.
The internal chamber has been lined with Victorian tiles but a few are missing.
