Project Description

Grosvenor Crescent Embassy

Grosvenor Crescent London

Contractor: Wilmott Dickson Interiors

The restoration consisted of restoring seven  18th and early 19th century mable chimney pieces.

A statuary French marble chimney piece,  Empire in style with ormolu mounts in a theme of hunting.

Circa 1820

As one of the principal rooms the standard and finish to this fireplace had to be to the highest of standards.

Before restoration began the marble was dirty stained and looking rather shabby.

The ormolu mounts and details were very worn and had reacted to chemicals on previous  cleaning,  all the gold plating had gone in but a few places.

To reguild the ormolu the whole fireplace had to be removed.

The marble then had all the mounts removed which were then sent off for cleaning and guilding in 9ct rose gold.

The marble was  repaired where required, cleaned and waxed ready for the newly guilded  mounts to be reattached, once all the parts where restored it was refitted and a black marquiner marble hearth installed.

A Regency statuary marble fireplace surround Circa 1810  one of a pair we restored. The fireplace was very dirty and had many chips and hair line cracks in a few places. The restoration consisted of a deep clean to the marble in situ and marble repairs. In various places once cleaned and repaired it was waxed and buffed.

A Louis 15th style statuary marble chimney piece circa 1810.

It is very well carved and has some very nice crisp floral details to the central cartouche.

The condition of the marble was very good.

The marble surround was cleaned waxed and buffed and minor resin repairs to chips in the shelf.

A large Regency statuary marble surround circa 1810. A very simple design with panels to the frieze and jambs and carved blockings of acanthus leaves.

The restoration

The marble chimney piece was very dirty and had a lot of stains and a couple of components were loose.

The marble was cleaned and sand papered down where stained then waxed and buffed.
